Data centers, the ’master organ’ that house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems, have puzzled the data center admins with the complications in network and problems in efficiency, reports Joseph F Kovar of CRN. Accordingly, there are ten predictions for the data center in 2014. They are: BYOD, not BYOA In 2014, Data Centers’ focus would be on Bring Your Own Device, rather than Bring Your Own Application, as for most businesses, it is hard to secure and enforce policies on devices running multiple business applications. Another layer of complexity lies in securing multiple applications based on users’ preferences. But with BYOD, working on a multitude of devices offers security to the user. Fewer DCs In 2014, it is expected that instead of using too many data center’s which lead to unnecessary expenses, duplicate infrastructures, there might be data center’s combined with all the existing facilities and some data center functions may be moved to cloud thereby reducing the number of unwanted. Private cloud development to boom For the companies which use large data centers, the private cloud gets an added advantage as it serves as both internal and external customer base. The year also will see a great demand for the cloud solution providers who have generated great revenue from hardware to make private cloud important to customers. Slow growth for public clouds After some break- ins in 2013, the public cloud will see muted growth in 2014, as data centers review the security risks of public clouds. For businesses, the public cloud will be a place where they store data for emergency. The year of the virtual desktop It’s the era of virtual desktop and 2014 would see a real progress, as businesses now realize the benefits of not purchasing full-fledged PCs for a large part, but find benefits in the virtual desktop wherein they can work directly from their mobile PCs, tablet PCs and even smartphones without depending on the traditional PC’s.
